1 AR Washington County Type: Sales Tax Voters will be asked to support a quarter-cent sales tax for Ozark Regional Transit on the May primary ballot. If approved, it could generate $7.5 million. Benton County chose not to put a similar measure on the ballot.

2 CA Alameda County Type: Sales Tax

The Alameda County Transportation Commission is proposing an extension of the Measure B sales tax, which funds roads, highway and public transit, on the November 2012 ballot. This would be an early renewal of the sales tax, and possibly a temporary increase to three-quarters of a cent. The current tax is set to expire in 2022.

3 CA Marin and Sonoma Counties Type: Repeal

Effort is under way to get a measure on the ballot next year to ask voters to repeal the tax approved in 2008 for SMART.

4 CA Napa County Type: Sales Tax The Napa County Transportation and Planning Agency is considering an extension of a current half-cent sales tax currently used for flood control projects. If placed on the ballot for renewal it would be used to fund transportation projects throughout the county. The current tax is set to expire in 2018.

5 CA San Francisco  

To close a projected $1.6 billion deficit over the next 20 years, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is planning to cut $30 million from its budget while also asking voters to approve $50 million in new revenue. Options being considered include:

  • an extra $50 to $150 vehicle registration fee. A “vehicle mitigation impact fee” would generate $24 million to $72 million a year.
  • charging all San Francisco households $60 to$180 a year as a “transportation utility fee” delivering $26 million to $74 million.
  • a parcel tax of up to $200 per property, good for $20 million to $39 million annually.
  • a $100 to $300 annual fee for free commercial off-street parking spaces, raising between $6 million and $17 million.
  • an increase to The City’s sales tax, generating $17 million from every one-eighth-cent increase.

6 CO Denver Type: Sales Tax Voters may see a sales tax increase of 0.4 cent for FasTracks on the ballot in 2012.

7 FL Gainesville Type: Sales Tax A special transportation sales tax is being considered for the November ballot. It may have to compete with a separate road-resurfacing tax.

8 FL Sarasota County Type: Sales Tax A sales tax measure to fund bus rapid transit may be considered early this year by county commissioners.

9 GA Atlanta Type: Sales Tax

Legislation passed in 2010 created 12 special tax districts in GA that each have the authority to place a 1% sales tax on the ballot in 2012 for transportation projects. The ten-county Atlanta metro region is placing a measure on the ballot that is almost 52% transit.

10 ID Statewide   A group of business community leaders are drafting a ballot measure that would give local sales tax authority to communities for funding transportation needs.

11 IN Marion and Hamilton Counties Type: Income Tax Voters may be asked to approve a 0.3-percent increase in their local income tax rates to help pay for a $1.3 billion rail and expanded bus system to be built over the next decade.

12 LA East Baton Rouge Parish Type: Property tax A 10-year, 10.6 mill property tax is on the ballot in Baton Rouge, Zachary and Baker to support system improvements for CATS. If it is approved, the proposal would generate $16.7 million in Baton Rouge, $636,00 in Baker and $1.1 million in Zachary.

13 MI Kalamazoo County Type: Property tax Two questions are expected to be put before voters, one asking for a millage increase and another asking a portion of residents to pay a new tax for fixed route service.

15 NC Orange County Type: Sales Tax Following Durham County's success in November 2011, Orange is likely to go to the ballot next fall with a financing measure of its own.

17 OH Perrysburg   Voters will be given the option of continuing participation with the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) or starting their own service. March 6, 2012  
18 OH Trumbull County   County Commissioners are expected to go back to the ballot with a levy for Niles-Trumbull Transit after defeat in November 2011. March 6, 2012  
19 OR Lake Oswego   City Councilors have promised to put a ballot measure before voters no later than May 2012 asking if city funds should be used for a streetcar extension.

20 SC Richland County Type: Sales Tax Will go back to the ballot for funding after the defeated November 2010 measure. Considering asking for less than 1 penny tax.

21 WA Clark County Type: Sales Tax C-Tran may be heading back to the ballot in 2012 to ask voters for a sales tax increase to support the operation of a bus rapid transit system and light rail extension into downtown Vancouver. November 2012  
22 WA Pierce County  
•Pierce Transit lost a sales tax increase in 2011, but may go back to voters this year.
