New Report on St. Louis Campaign Story:
From Checkbook Campaigns to Civic Coalitions: Lessons from the Passage of Prop A The authors analyzed the factors that made the April 2010 measure so much more successful than Prop M in 2008. They conclude with two lessons: a "well-designed GOTV efforts with large numbers of volunteers can increase turnout among supporters without mobilizing opponents" and "successful civic initiatives should not be controlled by big business (or any other single element of the community) but by a broad coalition that stretches across economic, racial, and civic divides, and includes people who care the most about the issue."

2010 Poll Results: Transportation for America has released the results of a nationwide poll of voters attitudes towards the future of public transportation.

  • 82% of voters believe the US would benefit from expanding and improving public transportation
  • A majority of voters would be willing to increase their own taxes to expand and improve their transportation options

 


Gas Prices & Transit Use
Echoing the results seen in 2008, transit ridership is on the rise as commuters face every increasing gas costs. Evidence mounts that rising gas prices are translating into rising, and sustained, public transportation ridership.
